The Beach Survival Challenge became an annual event in 2004, organized by Vicki Cech and members of the Beach and Pier Safety Task Force. Vicki and her family suffered the loss of her son, Andy Fox, who drowned after being caught in a rip current at Grand Haven State Park. The event was organized to promote awareness of the dangers in the water. The participants in the challenge compete in several challenges while learning about beach and water safety.
